The CYCLINAC: An Innovative Accelerator Complex for Diagnostics and Hadrontherapy

Hadrontherapy is a novel technique of cancer radiation therapy which instead of high energy photons employs beams of charged hadrons, protons and carbon ions in particular. Due to their physical and radiobiological properties, they allow to obtain a highly conformal treatment, sparing at maximum the surrounding healthy tissues. Hadrontherapy is nowadays becoming a clinical reality and a much larger diffusion is foreseen in the near future. In this framework, the TERA Foundation has conceived the CYCLINAC, an innovative accelerator complex composed by a high current cyclotron followed by a linear accelerator. The first CYCLINAC is thought to be the heart of an innovative multidisciplinary centre for advanced diagnostics with radioisotopes and radiation therapy with proton beams.
